BEDESTEN

Bedesten is a contemporary commercial and cultural complex in Konya, conceived through the reinterpretation of two defining elements of Anatolian architectural heritage: the eight-pointed Seljuk star and the traditional Ottoman bedesten. The masterplan transforms these historic references into a modern spatial composition, creating a distinctive destination rooted in the architectural identity of the city.

The overall layout is organized around the geometry of the eight-pointed star, a recurring symbol in Seljuk art and architecture. Eight radial building wings extend from a strong central core, creating a balanced and recognizable plan while naturally defining pedestrian routes, landscaped courtyards, entrance points, and commercial streets throughout the development.

At the heart of the project, a centralized shopping district draws inspiration from the historic bedestens and covered bazaars of the Ottoman period. Rather than directly reproducing traditional architecture, the concept reinterprets the atmosphere of interconnected market streets, sheltered passages, courtyards, and gathering spaces within a contemporary commercial environment. The central area becomes the social and architectural focus of the development, bringing retail, circulation, landscape, and public life together.

Through this combination of Seljuk geometry and Ottoman marketplace typology, Bedesten establishes a contemporary architectural language that remains closely connected to Konya's cultural heritage.
